Kate was born in Winchester, England and has lived in the spectacular Okanagan valley, in Penticton since 1966. She began painting in watercolour in 1999. She was juried to Active status with the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2002. Of the FCA, Kate says: "I appreciate the high technical standards of this national association, and as members we are constantly challenged to put forward our strongest work."
Here's what she says about painting with watercoloours: "I am passionate about the medium of watercolour. Sometimes it presents surprises that can become interesting additions to the painting. I prefer to use only transparent pigment, building layers that glow. I paint in a realistic style and choose to paint subjects closely connected with the intricacies of nature. I’m intrigued by the perfection of the tiniest items, a snail in a garden, a cluster of tiny mushrooms. Skeletonized leaves are some of my recent subjects. I am also interested in capturing some of our “disappearing” landscapes, unspoiled grasslands, wetlands, disappearing orchards, old buildings and antiques."
Recently she has begun painting watercolour monotypes, using a printing press. For Kate, this process is also fascinating and the end result is often a complete surprise.
Kate's work has been published in the magazine, Watercolour Artist.
